چکیده

In a recent paper G.V. Stupakov and P. Chen[1] have advanced the possibility of beam-beam interaction suppression in circular colliders for heavy particles such as muons and protons, by introducing a plasma at the interaction point. More recently and independently, A. Skrinsky [2] has suggested to use flowing liquid Li for the same purpose in a muon collider. This is an alternative that is only plausible for muons and indeed is used in the present cooling scenario [3]. The electromagnetic interaction between the colliding beams results in perturbation of the individual particle motion, which leads to unstable motion and loss of the beam. This effect is quantified with the single parameter beam-beam tune shift [4]. For a round beam = rcN 4 N , where N is the number of particles in the bunch, rc is the classical radius of the particle in the beam and N is the normalized emittance. 0:044 for a muon collider. I Plasma Suppression of Beam - Beam in Circular ColUders

A possibility to suppress beam-beam interaction in a circular collider by means of introducing a plasma at the interaction point of the colliding beams is considered. It is shown that for TeV proton and muon colliders, the overdense plasma can easily suppress the beam-beam tune-shift parameter several times without degrading the beam lifetimes. In this paper we study a possibility to overcome a...

The Classical Beam - Beam Interaction for the Muon Collider : a First Look ∗

In this note we carry out some basic beam-beam studies for the muon collider in the incoherent classical approximation, taking into account the instability of the muon. This collider has a beam-beam parameter value typical of an e+e− collider, and a damping time that is more typical of a hadron collider. We conclude that these characteristics can coexist thanks to the short cycle time forced by...

The Bethe-Heitler Process as a Source of Muons

in high-energy photon interactions with a nucleus A, as recently suggested in [7] (slide 23). Of course, muon-pair production by this process is suppressed relative to electron-positron pair production by the ratio (me/mμ) 2 ≈ 1/40, 000, so there is an issue of the efficiency of muon production via reaction (1). The Bethe-Heitler process (1) is further suppressed near threshold, so it would be ...

Interaction Regions with Increased Low-betas for a 2-tev Muon Collider

The diiculty encountered in designing an interaction region (IR) for a 2-TeV Muon Collider lies in the extreme constraints placed on beam parameters at the point of collision. This paper examines a relaxation of the interaction-point criterion insofar as it impacts luminosity, the design, and stability of the interaction region.

Some problems in plasma suppression of beam - beam interactions at muon colliders . ∗

The idea of plasma suppression of beam-beam effects at muon colliders is discussed. It is shown that one should take into account collisions in the plasma that were ignored before. Rough estimates show that this effect leads to a fast “recovery” of the beam magnetic field. For beam parameters characteristic for muon colliders the suppression of the magnetic component of the beam field (1/2 of t...
